Learavia Learfan 2100 / Fan Holdings Inc Learfan 2100

LearAvia decided to increase the gross weight of its yet to be built Lear Fan 2100 turboprop from 6,000 to 7,200 pounds. This change will add only 24 extra pounds of structural material. The extra load carry¬ing capacity will cut range, speed and single engine ceiling slightly.

A successful first flight was made on 1 January 1981 by the first prototype. Powered by two pusher Pratt & Whitney PT6B-35F, two more prototypes were under construction at Reno, plus a static test example.
The Lear Fan spent all of 1981 in flight tests after a New Year’s Day first flight. The Lear Fan cabin has been stretched and much design effort has been concentrated on the single pusher propeller; however, Learavia still hoped to have the non-metal airplane certificated by the end of 1982.
Ownership passed 1982 to Fan Holdings Inc. of U.S.A., but with production in Northern Ireland. Production moved to U.S.A. 1983 but program halted 1985.

Leading Edge Air Foil / LEAF Talon

The LEAF Talon is for intermediate or advanced pilots. A high performance glider with responsive pitch control, very stable stall and slow and easy take off characteristics. It has the performance of a trunk tip glider yet the simplicity of a conventional glider.

A swing down wing post are standard on each glider. There is black powder baked-on epoxy 4in kingpost and control bars. There are sadddls for longer tube life. The cambered keel spar is 3/4in.

The leading edge spars are constructed from 6061-T6 1.75in x .049 aluminium tubing. The keel and crossbar spars are of 6063-T832 15in x .049 tubing. Each spar is drilled, sleeved, bushed, and end capped. The control bar (58in wide) and king post are 1in x .090 6063-T832 aluminium.

All rigging wires are 3/32in 7×7 stainless steel clear coated. There are no weak links on the flying wires. All wires are solid swedged with two nico’s. Two aircraft turnbuckles AN155-165S in the top rigging wires are to be tightened after assembly. The wingpost wires are 3/32in 7×7 uncoated stainless steel cable with one AN155-8 (800 lb tested) for tuning.

All tangs, three position control bar box, kingpost bracket, wrap around nose plate, and thimbles are stainless steel. Wingnuts, castle nuts, nylocks and bolts are aircraft quality.

The sail is precision cut and heavily reinforced with all seams double zig-zag stitched with heavy dacron thread. Prior to sewing, the cloth is overlapped and attached with double sided tape to ensure positive sewing edges. 8in applied sleeves give a cleaner sail. Two battens per side and roach provide improved lift distribution and define washout.

A prone harness with knee hangers was optional.

Leading Edge Air Foil / LEAF World Cup

The World Cup has a flatter glide angle, slower sinking speed, more sensitive pitch control, and quicker turning than a standard Rogallo, yet it is stable. A beginner’s glider for competition in the Standard or World Cup standard class.

The airframe is constructed from 6061 or 6063 aluminium tubing 1.5in x .049 depending upon size of glider. Each spar is drilled, sleeved, bushed, and end capped. The control bar (51in or 58in wide) and kingpost are constructed from 1in x .090 wall 6063-T832 alloy.

All wires are 3/32in 7×7 stainless steel clear coated. No weak links on flying wires. All wires are solid swedged with two nico’s. Two aircraft turnbuckles AN 155-16S in the top rigging allow wires to be tightened after assembly. Wingpost wires are 1/16in 7×7 uncoated stainless steel cable with one AN 155-8 turnbuckle (800 lb test) for tuning.

All tangs, 3 position bar box, kingpost bracket, wrap around nose plate, and thimbles are stainless steel. Wingnuts, castle nuts, nylocks, and bolts are aircraft quality.

The sails were Howe & Bainbridge 3.8 oz stabalised dacron with 11 colours. Prior to sewing, the cloth is overlapped and attached with double sided tape to insure positive sewing edges. All seams double zig-zag reinforced at stress areas. Wingpost and three battens per side give a quieter and smoother sail at different speed ranges.

A prone harness with knee hangers were optional.

The kingpost and control bars had black powder baked-on epoxy. Saddles for longer tube life.

Leading Edge Air Foil / LEAF Deep Hollow

The LEAF Deep Hollow is designed for the more experienced pilot. A flatter sail add 20% hollow in the trailing edge maded the control light and responsive. It extended the glide ratio and was stable in turbulent air.

The airframe is all constructed from 6061 or 6063 aluminium tubing 1.5in x .049 or 1.75in x .049 wall. Each spar is drilled, sleeved, bushed, and end capped. The control bar, 58in wide, and kingpost are constructed from 1in x .090 wall 6063-T832 aluminium with black powder baked-on epoxy. Wingpost was standard to oppose the loaded sail angle.

All rigging wires are 3/32in 7 x 7 stainless steel clear coated. All wires are solid swedged with two nico’s. Two AN 155-16S aircraft turnbuckles in the to rigging allow wires to be tightened after assembly. Wingpost wires are 1/16in 7 x 7 uncoated stainless steel cable with one AN 155-8 (800 lb test) for tuning.

All tangs, three position control box, kingpost bracket, wrap around nose plate, and thimbles are stainless steel. Wingnuts, castle nuts, nylocks, ad bolts are aircraft quality.

The sail is made from Howe & Bainbridge 3.8oz stabilised dacron in 11 colours. Prior to sewing, the cloth is overlapped and attached with double sided tape to ensure positive sweing edges. All seams are double zig-zag with reinforcement at the stress areas. Six inch applied sleeves give a cleaner sail to provide more lift with soother air flow. The unique fan panels allow each seal to be degrees to the trailing edge eliminating stretch after use.

The Deep Hollow came with sail ties and cordura cover, and a prone harness with knee hangers was optional.

Leading Edge Air Foil / LEAF Trike

Single seat single engined flex wing aircraft with weight shift control. Rogallo wing. Pilot suspended below wing in trike unit, using bar to control pitch and yaw/roll by altering relative positions of trike unit and wing. Undercarriage has three wheels in tricycle formation; suspension on nosewheel and glass fibre suspension on main wheels. Push-¬right go left nosewheel steering independent from yaw control. No brakes. Aluminium ¬tube trike unit, without pod. Engine mounted below wing driving pusher propeller.
This single seat, single ¬engine trike unit uses a double pole structure, stiffened by the tubes forming the side supports of the seat, and is adaptable to fit most weight shift hang gliders.
The combination of glass fibre laminate suspension on the main wheels and large wheel diameters should guarantee it remark¬able all terrain performance. Previously powered by a Cuyuna 430D or 430R 30hp engine with a 2/1 reduction drive, it was later offered with the type ULII 02 35hp engine from the same company, still with a 2/1 reduction drive. The Leaf is easy to rig and when folded it measures 8.0 x 5.7 x 3.7ft (2.44 x 1.70 x 1.09m). Price was $2495 built in 1982.
