The design of the Flite wing has been more complex and time consuming than a top competition glider. The new profile reduces pitching and produces smooth and progressive launch characteristics. The hybrid top surface makes the wing durable and lightweight. The structure of the wing and line layout are both neat simple and incorporate horizontal tension straps on the A,B and C lines that take the horizontal forces from the line layout into the sail without pulling or creases. Across the whole span there is a D band which controls the spanwise tension in back part of the wing giving the wing the right combination of safety and stability. Fitted with Big ears risers as standard, stable and fast speed system, the Flite is the DHV1.
The Stingray incorporates full-Reflex profile into a profile and planform that is perfect for powered flight. At slow speeds the Stingray offers smooth and dynamic turns that are perfect for thermaling and low-level precision flights. With the speed bar and the trimmers off, the full-Reflex profile kicks in. The Stingray turns into a high-speed wing. Available in three sizes and two colour schemes, the Stingray carries payloads of 80 to 135 kg and surfs the sky at speeds between 30 and 65 km/h.

When the original Sport was released it had a DHV1-2 certification, with DHV2 performance. The Sport 2 was planned to reduce the weight of the glider, increase the resistance to collapse, increase stability accelerated., and reduce the pitching (dynamic) of the wing so the glider is easier to fly. An important consideration was to keep the DHV1-2 certification. The aerodynamic profile of the wing has been selected to give a glider that is not too pitchy, yet still bites nicely into thermals. In roll the glider responds smoothly to weight shift yet it remains reassuring. This balance of stability has been obtained by using new technology unique to the Sport, called the Stability Control System. The new internal structure of the Sport is both lighter and more structurally rigid. But this rigidity is carefully balanced to be rigid where it helps to be rigid and to be soft and flexible where this helps the overall feel of the wing. The new internal structure is very complex, and is composed of 224 internal structural members. Each of these members is a piece of cloth which has been carefully designed using CAD techniques to support the wing giving a clean profile whilst minimising the weight of material used to create the structure.
Airwave Sports 3
The line layout of the wing has been optimised compared to the original Sport so as to reduce the ovverall amount of line parasitic drag while maintaining launch characteristics as well as reducing the likelihood of cravates by careful positioning of the line bifurcations. Comparative glide performance tests showed that the glide performance at trim speed was significantly better than the Sport1. Factory measurements show that the best glide of the Sport1 is 8.2, and the Sport2 glides at 8.5. The difference in glide performance increases with speed. The Sport2 is not faster than the Sport1. The Sport2 has passed new DHV1-2 tests, which include much tighter controls on asymmetric collapses as well as spiral stability, pitching and dynamics. The new requirements are that a DHV1-2 must limit glider pitching to less than 45degrees following a 75% side collapse. The DHV 1-2 Sport3 is directly evolved from the Sport 2 and designed by Bruce Goldsmith is certified in 5 sizes, with a complete sail redesign with hybrid Sail technology (longer lasting and lighter). The Sport 3 uses 50gm/sq m silicone coated Gelvenor on the leading edge, and for less stressed parts of the sail, 35gm/sq m Porcher Marine. Two different weights of cloth are used for the supported and unsupported ribs, providing strength where it is required, and using lighter cloth elsewhere.
Airwave Sport 3
The whole sail of the Sport3 has been completely redesigned over the Sport 2 using the paracad software, giving less drag. The openings now include curved panels on the bottom surface and are finished with soft tape giving smoother reinflation. According to the manufacturer, the Sport3 also offers “auto-centering” in thermals thanks to the balance between the pitching moment of the profile and the wing twist. The Sport 3 was available in 5 sizes. Research on the Sport4 involved building both 3-line and 4-line versions of the Sport4, both of which would pass the certification tests. After extensive testing it was apparent that the 4-line version was simply easier to fly: it thermalled better, with longer brake travel, and still had responsive handling. The conclusion was that for gliders of longer cord 4 rows of lines were better, so for the Sport4 we used four rows of lines in the middle of the wing where the cord is longer and 3 rows in the tip where the cord is less. The wing incorporates hybrid diagonals, span-wise strengtheners to add greater rigidity and collapse resistance, and one less of the cells, to give even greater roll stability and make the wing even more accessible to a greater range of pilot. The X-Brace of the FR series is used on the Sport 4. This single X of reinforcing webbing in the middle of the wing gives a centrally reinforced region of stiffness and creates a stronger, more collapse resistant wing. The Sport Competition optimised the glider though several changes to the wing’s construction that has improved the flying experience in almost every respect, from performance to weight handling and safety. Flight test measurements revealed a glide improvement at trim speed, but a massive improvement of around one point in glide at top speed, leading to a significantly flattened polar curve. The Sport Competition has been optimized by changes in several significant construction details leading to a weight reduction of almost one kilo. By using the lighter materials the brake pressure has been reduced and the handling has improved as well due to the reduced inertia of the wing. The Sport Competition is certified EN-B and LTF 1-2. The Sport Competition uses a lighter cloth on the bottom sail as well as in the internal structure. The gallery lines of the Sport Competition use 80kg UV coated microlines by Edelrid. It is only the lines next to the wing that are microlines. All the middle and lower lines are wear resistant sheathed lines. The parasitic drag is reduced even more by using special risers. The change in the speed system the Sport Competition gives a smoother more direct acceleration.

Designed from the outset for stability, the Logic features a partially closed leading edge, a wing flex system, and diagonal rib system. The Logic has a high spanwise tension producing a wing which does not move or wobble, and the incidence of the tips reduces tip collapses to a minimum. Use of the latest aerodynamic profiles in the design of the wing produced a glider very damped in pitch. When in turbulence the glider stays firmly overhead and is highly resistant to surging forward or back. The Logic is stable in Roll. The glider will exit from a turn as soon as the pilot releases the brake, even in a very steep spiral dive. The Logic passes every test of the DHV 1 certification and collapses of even 70% of the span of the glider produce little or no change in direction of flight. Even when using the speed system the reaction to collapses remains tame. When you inflate the glider, it rises gently and smoothly overhead, with little tendency to overfly the pilot. The Logic is not sensitive to harness adjustment. The closed cells produce a cleaner sail around the nose of the glider, and this gives better stability in this area. The open section in the middle helps to ensure that the center of the glider inflates before the tips which produces a more easily controllable and progressive inflation. Re-opening of the glider during collapses is not effected at all because re-inflation comes from air traveling across the glider near the trailing edge and not from air entering at the leading edge.

Ultra-weight gliders aren’t just for descents nowadays. Fabric technology and paraglider design has advanced so much that, despite its light weight, the Alpine is a fully functioning, soarable paraglider capable of cross country flight. The standard Alpine is based on the DHV 1 Gecko beginner wing. The two designs share the same sail, line configuration and certification. To create the Alpine the Gecko was analysed in every detail to reduce its weight. The sail was changed from 39 g/m_ with a 45 g/m_ leading edge, to 27 g/m_ with a 35 g/m_ leading edge, the Mylar edging tape has been changed to a lighter nylon tape, the line attachments have lighter weight reinforcing, the risers change to super lightweight Dyneema webbing and the removable speed system has been redesigned to be effective, yet light-weight. On the Alpine even the seams are sewn differently to reduce weight. The Alpine weighs 3.2 Kg in the S size, 3.5 Kg in the M and 3.9 Kg in the L. The Alpine Extreme was designed as an ultra-lightweight glider and is only 17.5 m (flat) and is both fast and manoeuvrable. It can be used as either a lightweight for small pilots, or as a mini glider for when the wind’s too strong to fly a normal wing. The Alpine Extreme is a one off design without certification. The Alpine Extreme weighs in at a lightweight 2.7 Kg. This is a very small and lightweight all purpose glider. Designed as a small, fun and safe glider of just 17.5sq meters, this wing is both fast and stable. Launch is very easy in everything from nil wind to very strong winds. Landing in no wind is fast but as the glider slows up nicely on the brakes it is possible to make a nice landing even in nil wind. With a trim speed of 43km/h with a total flying weight of 90kg, the ‘Alpine Extreme’ will penetrate in a strong wind when most other paragliders have to stay on the ground. Top speed with speed bar is 55km/h. The minimum sink rate with an all up weight of 60kg is around 1m/sec. With a flying weight of 90kg minimum sink is around 1.6m/sec. Best glide is between 7 and 8 depending on wing loading. The wing can also be flown by small pilots of weight as low as 35kg and the design target for safety and stability, is as a lowend 1-2 class glider, though if you fly this wing heavy the reactions will be much more dynamic than a 1-2 wing. Price in 2009 EUR 2300.

The Burn is a freestyle wing with a high trim speed and a small surface area. The Burn’s high wing loading make it perfect for SAT’s, tumbles, reversals, McTwists and all acro manoeuvres. The Slingshot is the full-blown acro wing that can tackle the latest generation of ‘extreme’ acro manoeuvres like the Infintie Tumble. It comes in two sizes and sits above the very Burn and Burn Extreme acro wings in the range. It delivers impeccable handling during helicopters, SATs and Tumbles and its new profile and special trimming give it enough energy to pull off even the most vertical of manoeuvres, like the Infinite Tumble. Taking the Mustang XS, some modifications to the general trim of the wing gave it more energy in dynamic manoeuvres, and closing off some of the cell entries towards the tip to give better SAT characteristics. An extra set of E lines offer greater support across the chord when the wing is helicoptered. The result is a glider that is designed and reinforced for full blown acro, is stable and pressured in all manoeuvres and comes in two sizes. The Slingshot is in two sizes, the 17.5 sq.m for normal acro flying and 16 sq.m for top end acro manoeuvres like the Infinite Tumble. Although the Slingshot 16 is more dynamic than the 17.5, it is harder to fly in certain manoeuvres due to the increase in wing loading and energy. The one characteristic of the Slingshot is the way the wing recovers. Even from the most radical situation the Slingshot wants to return to normal flight and fly on. Price in 2009 EUR 2580.

Airwave’s special strong wind glider, Rodeo incorporates the characteristics of a speedflyer with those of a beginner’s glider. Designed by Bruce Goldsmith, the Rodeo is exceptionally fast for pilots who love to soar on windy ridges and dunes as well as in alpine regions. The Rodeo is also perfect for playing in strong winds on the training hill. Not based on a low-performance parachute profile, but on the biconvex profile of a gentle LTF 1-2 glider it is easy to handle even in strong winds of 40 km/h. The speed glider with its simple line and riser concept is available in 15 sqm Projected Area. The Rodeo is built for those that love speed. Unlike speed riding wings the Rodeo is a mini glider. It is so much smaller than a standard wing, it is much nippier with agile, responsive handing to match. The Rodeo’s tiny size also makes it a great choice for super light pilots – from 40 kg upwards. The Rodeo is 17.5 sqm Flat Area, made from strong standard weight fabrics and flys at 45 km/h with a 75 kg pilot.
