Apco Aviation

APCO has been involved in the paragliding industry from the very beginning. Anatoly Cohn, the company’s owner and founder, started in hang gliding, designing and building gliders from 1976 with Agur Gliders until 1982 when he founded APCO. He quickly realized that paragliding was the direction for sport flying and concentrated on developing quality gliders at a competitive price. Since that time the company has steadily grown, employing 60 people in 1996 and producing thousands of paragliders, harnesses and parachute reserve systems every year.

The first paraglider produced by APCO was the 7 or 9 cell System K, staring in 1986. By 1996, a mere ten years later, APCO was producing an average of 3 new models a year and had already picked up 6 world records on its wings. A trend which was to continue into the next decade. By the beginning of 2006 APCO had brought out more than 40 models of paragliders and now has 11 world records set on APCO wings.
Apco produced over 2000 wings in 1997.

The Macro is Airwave´s aerobatic glider and it is based on the Magic3 XS.
The wing has been developed with the cooperation of Stefan Hodek who flies aerobatics for Airwave in Germany. The Macro is optimised for aerobatic manouvres and is particularly good at Helicopters and SATs. The Macro is load tested to 18g the; same as the other sizes of the Magic3.

Airwave Gliders Combi

Airwaves’ tandem Combi glider bridges the gap between high performance tandems and tandems which are easy to handle, and with the performance needed for good cross-country flights. DHV awarded the Combi a DHV 1 for the launch test (with trimmers released). The landing allows the pilot to slow down enough so that even in light tailwind conditions the pilot and passenger can achieve a stand-up landing.
The Combi has a combination of a new aerodynamic profile and an effective brake line distribution allowing the pilot to achieve unusually slow landing speeds and a remarkable energy conversion for super soft landings.
The turn co-ordination allows the Combi to outclimb many solo gliders and the trimmers with their gearing ratio allow easy trim application and lower brake pressure particularly with the trimmers on.
To reduce trimmer wear, the Combi uses a 2-1 reduction which halves the load. This avoids slipping and makes the trimmer easier to pull. The trimmer it self is replaceable and every Combi is delivered with a spare pair.
Due to the internal diagonal system the Combi has a total line length of just 440 meters.
The leading edge of the Combi is fully open in the center to promote fast inflation. The tips are fully closed as is conventional in paragliders, but between these two areas is a zone of transition of partially closed cells. This detail is not only the logical transition zone between the two extremes but also produces a cleaner leading edge.

Airwave Gliders Mustang

Mustang 2

Airwave’s first production glider with the Hybrid sail was the Mustang in spring 2005. Much of the design of the Mustang has been directly handed down from Airwave’s Magic FR competition glider.
The internal structure is very similar, using the tri-cell diagonal system. The spanwise tension is also controlled with horizontal bands on the trailing edge on the bottom surface as well as internal bands on the unsupported cells close to the top surface to help reduce unwanted wobbliness or movement within the wing.
The Mustang is constructed from 586 separate pieces of ripstop nylon66 high tenacity cloth, each piece being a different shape designed using Airwave’s CAD system. This number of panels excludes all the reinforcing patches.
Optimisation of the sail cut, wind tunnel tests, the aerodynamic profile, an aspect ratio of 5.8, and minimal line length are all performance refinements that have led to the glide performance of the Mustang. The Mustang, with a trim speed glide performance close to 9:1, has a surprisingly flat polar for a wing of this class.
The concept of mixing cloths on the top surface, putting Gelvenor on the first stripe of the leading edge and 39 gm/m, Porcher 9017 E38A on the rest of the top surface, has the objective to make a glider that lasts just as long as a 100% Gelvenor wing, but with the lighter overall. The result is the Hybrid top surface.
The Mustang has a progressive system where the tip is fully closed as usual and then as you move towards the centre of the wing there are progressively more and more open cells until you reach the fully open section in the centre. This gives just the right amount of air circulation, excellent inflation and enhanced performance.
The wing reacts well to weightshift, barley needing brakes to swing into a coordinated turn, making the Mustang great for aerobatics.
The Mustang has a tendency to self-centre in the thermal, and it is simple to adjust your bank angle to match exactly the size of your thermal.
The Mustang 2 kept the same basic profile and shape but was re-tuned with an increase ofy 1sq.m without taking away any of the original Mustang’s agility. This slightly larger sail gave a better sink rate at all speeds and has dramatically decreased the stall speed from the Mustang 1’s 23 km/h, to 20 km/h.
At the top end of the speed range the new profile technology has given the Mustang 2 greater stability when accelerated giving the glider a large and very usable speed range
A development in line layout has given the Mustang 2 a longer more progressive brake range that its predecessor whilst keeping the same level of agility and making the wing even more responsive to small precise brake movements. The line layout has been simplified resulting in less line, less drag and hence a better glide at speed and the accelerator redesigned to be more like competition wings.

Airwave Gliders Scenic Tandem / Scenic 2 XL

Scenic 2

The Airwave Scenic is a tandem glider between high performance and working tandem.
The DHV-1 (trimmer released) Scenic with a new aerodynamic profile and effective brake line distribution for unusual low landing speeds, has eternal trimmers: 2:1 reduction halves load and wear on trimmers, a partly closed leading edge, and wing flex system.
The second generation of the Scenic tandem boasts a better glide angle, an improved sink rate and handles even more like a solo than the original. It comes delivered with negative trimmers to slow the wing down and make flying with heavy passengers lighter on your arms. Positive trimmers to accelerate the wing for big distance gliding and flying with lighter passengers easier are available on request.
Minute changes to the panel shaping and cut of the cloth improved both handing and performance.
We also made some Changes to the lower surfaces of the cell entries create a cleaner, more tensioned leading edge, which has again improved performance. The Scenic 2 is made from the hybrid cloth. The wing is one kilogram lighter than its predecessor making not only light wind launches easier but making the glider easy and less tiring to fly over long periods.

Airwave Gliders Cobra

The Cobra sports wing has high performance for its class and is as close to being a true three-line glider as possible. It supersedes the top selling Mustang2.
Technology fed down from the Magic5 has given the Cobra a very low sink rate and an outstanding glide. This significant leap in performance comes from two important areas of development. The Cobra has a new hybrid line configuration. For most of the span there are only three lines, except high up in the centre of the wing where short D lines branch off to give greater stability. The result is a 15% reduction line from the Mustang2, with the total length dropping 60m, from 385m to 326m. A new airfoil design and internal airflow management has helped increase the aspect ratio from 5.7 on the Mustang2 to 5.95.
