Founded 1981 by Richard “Dick” Rutan and Jeana Yeager to develop Voyager two-crew, twin piston-engined trimaran aircraft of very unusual configuration to make first-ever non-stop and unrefuelled flight around the world. Voyager first flew June 1984 and achieved world flight December 1986. Designer was Burt Rutan and aircraft built at Rutan Aircraft Factory.

Major design review undertaken, with original supersonic wing replaced by subsonic and simpler wing of greater strength and carrying more fuel.
