Sud-Ouest SO.1310 Farfadet

This is the first French convertible. It can take off vertically, hover in the air, land vertically by means of its rotor, and fly forward at a speed greater than that of pure helicopters by means of a fixed wing and an airscrew fully independent of the rotor.
The change from one state to the other is accomplished without any change at all in the external appearance.
The SO.1310 is provided with two independent power units. In the rear is an Arrius II 360hp Turbomeca unit, which supplies the jet rotor with compressed air at take-off. The all-metal three-bladed rotor is identical with the one used in the SO.1120 Ariel III, but with a larger diameter.

In the forepart there is a Turbomeca Artouste II turbo-prop engine with a take-off power of 360 hp, operating a variable-pitch airscrew. During forward flight, the rotor originally used for take-off continues to auto-rotate, but with low lift, and the greater part of the lift is transferred to the fixed wing. Mounted over the fixed wing is the pilot’s cabin, fitted with dual control, and in this cabin there is room for either three passengers, a freight load or two stretchers stacked on top of each other.

The Farfadet single prototype F-WBGD first flew on 8 May 1953. Its maiden flight, lasting about twenty minutes, was made as a true helicopter, the following one, on the same day, with the rotor and the airscrew respectively powered by their individual engines.

Sud-Est SE-700

During the war, SNCASE worked on an autogyro known as the SE.700, which flew for the first time in 1945. This three-seater could take off from where it stood by changing the pitch of the rotor. The airscrew was also of the variable-pitch type.

Sud-Aviation
Formed 1 March 1957 by amalgamation of Ouest-Aviation (SNCASO) and Sud-Est Aviation (SNCASE). Main responsibility was further development and marketing of highly successful S.E.210 Caravelle twin-jet airliner, first flown in 1955, and Alouette series of helicopters. Continued also development of S.E.5000 Baroudeur, S.O.9050 mixed-power interceptor and widely used S.O.4050 Vautour twin-jet multipurpose aircraft. Frelon series of large turbine-powered helicopters developed after first flight in February 1959, and Super Frelon flew December 1962, setting new world records. In 1965, Morane-Saulnier became a subsidiary of Sud-Aviation. Design leadership in A300 European Airbus assumed and diversification into non-aeronautical fields undertaken. Jointly with Nord Aviation made Corvette light rear-engined jet transport.
On January 1st, 1970 became major component of Aerospatiale, with Nord-Aviation and SOCATA, and the missile manufacturing company, SEREB.
Stauffer Gyroplane

In 1939 O L Stauffer of Elkhart IN., USA, built a single-place gyrocopter on which the revolving upper wing locked in place to convert the aircraft into a biplane.
Stalker Windmill Autoplane

The 1935 Windmill Autoplane had foldable blades allowed people to drive this plane on the streets.

Sport Copter Vortex

A single-seat partially enclosed autogyro, Sport Copter’s composite seats conform to the pilot’s shape, including the head, provide comfort as well as crucial support. Independent toe-operated hydraulic disc brakes are standard on all models. Its unique nose-wheel suspension operates independently from the rudder to make for smooth takeoffs and landings in crosswinds. Vortex reaches 100 mph with a 67-hp engine and has seating for one with a useful load of 460 pounds. Kits for the Vortex in 2001: US$20,400
Standard: semi-enclosure, folding rotor mast, pre-rotator, independent hydraulic disc brakes, new rotor head and roto-control Cyber Seat, nosewheel and main gear suspension.
