ArmourKraft Stolite

Stollite Mk1 single seat with R503

The ArmourKraft Stolite was a project designed by Arthur Armour to be built by his apprentice while he was building something else. It took three years to build, working two nights a week after work. The wings are from the ArmourKraft Super Cricket.

Design to fit Australian 95:10 class, MTOW 300kg (661lb), single seat, it was powered by a Rotax 503, registered 10-3218, and first flew in 1999 at The Oaks, NSW, Australia.

After a minor incident, aircraft was rebuilt in the next ‘class’ allowing more weight and two seats, and was fitted with a Rotax 582, and registered 19-3218.

Eventually the 582 failed, so an old Rotax 912 was fitted.

The 912 was required for another project and removed, to be replaced with a modified BMW R100 bike engine.

ArmourKraft Super Cricket

Original

The Super Cricket was the first ultralight Arthur Armour completed. It was rebuilt from a cloned machine bought to build up flying time.

Registered 10-0122 and originally powered by a modified Yamaha 350 bike engine, it would barely fly.

After the first rebuild, it still wouldn’t fly well, so a Rotax 503 was fitted. That made it fly.

It was slowly improved over a couple of years until blown over in a storm and parted out.

Arion Aircraft LS-1 Lightning

Arion Aircraft design of the Lightning structure was tested extensively for symmetrical and asymmetrical flight loads to over 9 G at a gross weight of 1320 lbs. Torsional testing of the fuselage and tail, load testing of welded parts rounded out the strength testing profile.
A Ballistic Recovery Systems was designed for the Lightning. This is instaled inside the molded skins.
Through a mix of molded fiberglass components and welded 4130 steel structures, the construction method has no epoxy layups are needed to complete the kit. Trimming and fitting the parts, some final fabrication of the parts and bolting the plane together is all that is required from the kit. Aircraft grade hardware is used throughout.
The Lightning cruises at 175 mph on 120 hp, burning 5.5 US gallons per hour. Solo climb rates is at 1700 fpm. Roll rates exceed 45 degrees/second. Top speed is 190 mph, and the touchdown speed is under 50 mph.
The Lightning was available with extended tips for LSA.

A carryover from the kit-built market, the all-composite, American-built Arion LS-1 Lightning was available in 2012 in Experimental-built kit form with a 135-140 knot cruise. The base price 2012: $119,900.

APEV Pouchel / Pouchelec / Scoutchel

Pouchel Classic

The original design, the Pouchel, was based upon the 1930s Henri Mignet-designed Mignet Pou-du-Ciel (Flying Flea), but constructed using three commercial household aluminium ladders to save construction time, cost and weight. The aircraft first flew on 14 March 1999 and 120 sets of plans were quickly sold.

When the ladder manufacturer no longer wanted to sell ladders for aircraft construction, due to liability concerns, Dalby redesigned the aircraft to use aeronautical rectangular aluminium tubing instead, which resulted in a lighter and cheaper aircraft, the Pouchel II.

Pouchel II

The Pouchel II replaced the original APEV Pouchel in production. The original Pouchel was constructed using three commercially available aluminium ladders, hence APEV is the Association pour la Promotion des Echelles Volantes, or in English, Association for the Promotion of Flying Ladders. Later the ladder manufacturer grew concerned about liability and refused to supply any more ladders. The Pouchel was then re-designed to use aeronautical rectangular aluminium tubing in place of the original ladders and the new aircraft was designated the Pouchel II. The Pouchel series are all derivatives of the classic 1930s Henri Mignet-designed Mignet Pou-du-Ciel (Flying Flea).

The Pouchel II features a cantilever rear wing with a strut-braced parasol front wing, a single-seat open cockpit without a windshield, fixed conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration. The aircraft is made from bolted-together aluminium tubing, with its flying surfaces covered in Dacron sailcloth. Its 6 m (19.7 ft) span front wing and 4 m (13.1 ft) span rear have a combined area of 12 m2 (130 sq ft) and both employ NACA 23112 airfoils. The prototype used a 40 hp (30 kW) Rotax 447 two-stroke powerplant, but the 35 hp (26 kW) Rotax 377 is also recommended. The 28 hp (21 kW) Hirth F-33 has also been fitted.

The Pouchel II sold for €4,000 in 2003. The APEV Pouchel II was supplied as plans or as a kit for amateur construction, but is no longer available. It has been replaced in production by the APEV Pouchel Light.

The Pouchel II was further refined into the Pouchel Light and an electric powered version, the Pouchelec.

Supplied as plans or as a kit for amateur construction, the Pouchel Classic is derived from the APEV Pouchel and features a cantilever rear wing and a strut-braced front parasol wing, a single-seat open cockpit, fixed conventional landing gear and a single engine in tractor configuration.

The Pouchel Classic differs from the earlier Pouchel in that it has a newly designed wooden fuselage to replace the aluminum ladder and rectangular tube design of the Pouchel and the Pouchel II. The Pouchel Classic’s fuselage is also longer. Its 6 m (19.7 ft) span front wing and 4 m (13.1 ft) span rear wing have a combined area of 12 m2 (130 sq ft) and employ NACA 23112 airfoils. Flying surfaces are covered in Dacron sailcloth. Standard engines recommended are the 35 hp (26 kW) Rotax 377 or the 40 hp (30 kW) Rotax 447 two-stroke powerplants. The Pouchel Classic kit sold for €5,000 in 2011.

Apco Twister

The Twister’s aerobatic wing is capable of soaring in high winds. A signature Limited Edition batch with anasymmetric graphic design has been in production since January 2007. Beginning of July 2007, and following the success of the Twister 18, Apco launched the Twister 16 for lighter pilots.
The Twister features a 43+km/h trim speed, tape reinforced L/E and ribs, Flexon technology, and Cousin’s Technora lines with no stretch or shrinking, and no friction burning.
A Butt hole on the trailing edge allows easy access to empty sand and dirt, all metal parts are non-rust or Stainless Steel, and the A and B hook-up points have span wise tape tensioner.
The Twister is NON CERTIFIED and should only be flown by expert Acro pilots and in compliance with national aeronautical law.
The glider is made from tear resistant Ripstop Nylon cloth, which is P.U. coated to zero porosity and then siliconized to give the fabric high resistance to the elements. Different cloth is used for the top, bottom and ribs due to their different functions. The lines are made of superaramid covered with a polyester sheath for protection against UV, wear and abrasion. The bottom section of the brake lines is made of polyester because of its better mechanical properties. The karabiners that attach the lines to the risers are made of stainless steel.

Apco Vista

The Vista is a DHV 1-2 Sports Class Intermediate, all-around wing with a free-style feel intended for a wide range of pilots and flying styles.
New technology has been incorporated to reduce the glider’s weight without sacrificing the durability of the cloth or construction.
Vista is equipped with Flexon® battens contributing to an extended speed range and improved performance, and Neodymium magnets and swivels on the brake handles.

Apco Thrust

Thrust 2009 is a purpose built paramotor wing improve the Thrust HP. Renamed Thrust 2009 (or for short Thrust 09), it is based on the earlier Thrust, but incorporates new materials and innovations. New designs features were incorporated into the wing such as the FLEXON ® batten system, new lightweight Gelvenor double coated siliconised cloth and stabilo steering.
The Thrust HP ’09 employs an automatic Stall Recovery System (SRS) that allows the pilot fly and launch at low speed despite the high wing loading. It prevents the wing and pilot from stalling at critical angle of attacks and aids in automatic recovery in case of a stall.
Thrust 2009 is suited to free flying and can be supplied with paragliding risers on request.
Other features are the diagonal rib structure, split A riser, all metal parts Stainless Steel or Aluminium, Butt Holes, Heavy-duty Swivels on brake handles, and integral, built-in, Neodymium brake magnets.
With a speed range of 23 to 60+ km/h, the Thrust SP is equipped with the HIT valve on the L/E, reflex airfoil, and universal riser + accelerator and trimmers to fit any paramotor frame
The lightweight Gelvenor siliconised cloth has an optional 5 Year/500 hour warranty, shedding 500gr. of its weight. The FLEXON® batten system incorporated, replacing mylar reinforcement on L/E, saves another 300gr from the weight of the glider.
Thrust HP 2009 is lighter by almost one kilo, thanks to the new cloth and sophisticated FLEXON® system – 5.4kg for S and 5.8kg for M.
Equipped with a new non-slip, easy lock Trim tab and with accelerator and trim (for paramotor version), featuring 2 different levels of hook-in points enabling the THRUST to be fitted to any frame and capable of a speed range of over over 50km/h.
The glider is made from tear resistant Ripstop Nylon cloth, which is P.U. coated to zero porosity and then siliconized to give the fabric high resistance to the elements. Different cloth is used for the top, bottom and ribs due to their different functions. The lines are made of superaramid covered with a polyester sheath for protection against UV, wear and abrasion. The bottom section of the brake lines is made of polyester because of its better mechanical properties. The karabiners that attach the lines to the risers are made of stainless steel.
In order to prove the safety of Thrust HP ’09, Air Turquoise, – official EN certification laboratory, – conducted a test sequence for all parameters of safety as a paramotor unit, in addition to standard paragliding certification. The tests confirmed that the reflex hybrid technology of Thrust HP actually improves the safety of the wing on higher speeds or with trimmers released. During the test, load on A and B risers were measured at different angle of attack at different speeds and it was proved that the load rises on A and B risers with increased speed, making collapses more difficult, contributing to the stability.

Apco Karma / Debute

KARMA out-performs many DHV 1-2 gliders while maintaining DHV 1 security at all speeds. A new profile, further planform evolution, and design innovations improved the overall performance. The glider weight has been sharply reduced, though still using Gelvenor cloth.
The Small prototype was called Debute.
The Karma is also available in a paramotor version, with modified risers with trimmers. Based on the DHV-1 Karma paraglider, it offers a solution as a school paramotor or as a first paramotor for the novice pilot.

Apco’s Karma Sport (Karma SP) new beginner / intermediate wing was offered side by side with Karma. An additional beginner / intermediate wing which has a lot in common with Karma’s philosophy, but is glider with sharp, immediate response (handling inspired by Vista), and of a light, low weight, low pack volume.
Almost a kilo lighter than the Karma, the SP is equipped with Flexon battens across the span on the L/E, has a significantly lower line drag, and is made from new lightweight cloth.
KARMA SP Paramotor Version
KARMA SP was extensively tested for freeflying as well as under power and its equally well suited for both – making it a great wing for a paramotor. The KARMA SP’s overall behavior is tuned for motorised flight. From easy nil wind inflation and launching to ultra-safe stability.

Apco Simba

Simba II is the 2002 update of the Simba. The Simba II is equiped with a new speed system better glide and stability at top speed along with a increase in top speed, and a new line layout for the tip A-Lines. The new tip line layout gives improved “Big Ear’s”.
Simba is the successor of the Bagheera and has a revised diagonal rib structure, incorporating the expierence gained from building the Tigra 2000. This created a cleaner wing andenabled a reduction in the amount of lines on the glider.

In order to meet the requirements of the Serial class competition rules, the Simba was re-certified in competition rigging configuration. It combines Top-level performance together with the safety of the Performance class certification. The only difference between the Simba and the Simba Comp is the type of line used. The Simba Comp has unsheathed Aramid. The line lengths are all identical.
The Simba has been certified Afnor Performance in all sizes with unsheathed competition lines, and Trimmers are available as an option.
