Austro Engine E4 / AE 300

The Austro Engine E4 (marketed as the AE 300) is a liquid-cooled, inline, four-cylinder, four-stroke, diesel piston aircraft engine. The engine is manufactured by Austro Engine, an Austrian company and subsidiary of Diamond Aircraft.

Following Diamond’s “General Aviation Single Point of Contact” strategy, Austro Engine started to design a new engine for use on Diamond products in 2005. It received its type certificate in January 2009. Certified through the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA on January 28, 2009 and through the FAA on July 29, 2009, the E4 is installed on various types of Diamond Aircraft Industries aircraft.

Austro Engine GmbH

Austro Engine is an Austrian manufacturer of aircraft engines based at Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. Founded in 2007, in 2008 the operating income was EUR 500.000 (2008) and there were 70 employees.

The production site and headquarters was built in 2007 with an investment of EUR 13 Million. The company was founded by Diamond Aircraft Industries and partners. The products are reciprocating engines and Wankel engines. The Wankel aero-engines are developed from the MidWest AE series engines developed at Staverton by MidWest, a UK firm that was bought by Diamond.

It was in 2017 that China-based Wanfeng Aviation Industry acquired full ownership of the Austria-based Diamond Aircraft Group. Wanfeng’s acquisition also included Diamond’s sister company and diesel aerospace engine maker Austro Engine.

Austro-Daimler 6

The Austro-Daimler 6 was a series of Austrian six-cylinder water-cooled inline aero engines first produced in 1910 by the Austro-Daimler company.

The first Austro-Daimler six-cylinder engine was designed by Dr-Ing Ferdinand Porsche to be an aircraft engine from the outset. Of high quality manufacture the Austro-Daimler was modestly rated at relatively low rpm, which gave the engine family a reputation for robustness and reliability.

Features of the Austro-Daimler included welded steel water jackets, (originally copper), seven main bearings and large diameter inclined inlet and exhaust valves opened by dual action push-pull rods and closed by spring pressure.

The Austro-Daimler inspired many imitators such as the Mercedes D.II, Benz Bz.IV, Beardmore, and Hiero 6. Modest availability of the Austro-Daimler engines forced some aircraft manufacturers to substitute Mercedes (the German Daimler company) engines in their aircraft, due to greater availability.

Variants:

Austro-Daimler 90 hp 6-cyl.
The original low capacity version developing 90 hp (67.11 kW), introduced in 1910.
