Stearman 70 / X-70 / XPT-943

X-70 (Model XPT-943)

Designed by Mac Short and Jack Clark, one prototype of the 1933 Stearman 70 aka X-70 (Model XPT-943) was built, registered NX571Y with ATC 2-516.

The design was essentially based on the Model 6-A, retaining the same basic proportions and had a similar fabric-covered welded-steel fuselage and fabric covered wooden wings. Differences included a rounder fuselage, with the addition of aluminium-frame stringers, as well as more rounded wingtips and tail.

New features incorporated included pilot-controlled trim tabs on the elevators and single-strut landing gear.

Designed and built in 60 days, the Model 70 first flew in December 1933 and was put forward as a contender for a USAAC contract for a primary trainer.

Testing by the US Army and Navy took place shortly after this, and although pleased with the aircraft as a whole, they found the stall far too gentle for a military trainer. In order to remedy this, small spoilers (or stall strips) were added to the leading edges of the upper wings to make the stall more abrupt. Further testing followed before an initial order of 61 aircraft was placed by the US Navy in 1923. These went into production as the Model 73.

The Model 70 evolved into Model 73, 75, USN NS-1, and USAAC PT-13.

Stearman 6-A NX787H

The 1933 6-C Cloudboy (ATC 2-457) was a modification of N2143 c/n 6010 with a canopied cockpit and repowered with a 330hp Wright J-6.

The 1931 model 6D Cloudboy (ATC 402) sold for $10,500, increasing to $12,750. One was built from 6-A as NC786H, later repowered with a 210hp Kinner (as 6-H) and then 215hp Lycoming (as 6-L), and finally converted into Army YBT-5.

Seven of the 6-F Cloudboy (ATC 371) were built. Four went to the USAAC as YPT-9 and YBT-5, and three converted to 6-H and 6-L (NC786H-788H]). YPT-9 31-462 was repowered with a 300hp P&W R-985-1 as YBT-5 and two other YPT-9s, 31-459 and 31-460, were converted.

Stearman YBT-5

In 1930 the model 6F sold for $7945, increasing to $9460 in 1931.

Stearman 6-F N788H

There were two conversions to the 1932 6-H Cloudboy (ATC 458) from older models (NC564Y and NC786H).

Stearman 6-H NX564Y

In 1932 four conversions from 6-A (NC795H) and -F (NC786H-788H) were made as 6-L Cloudboy (ATC 459), powered by a 215hp Lycoming R-680 engine. They were Army version YPT-9B.

One model 6-F, NC797H, was converted to the 1931 model 6-P (ATC 2-520) powered with a 220hp Wright J-5 engine.

Stearman 6-P NC797H

The 1932 PT-9 primary trainer was adapted from civil Model 6 Cloudboy series with a 210hp Kinner engine. Four YPT-9 were built – 31-459 to 31-462 – testing various engines.

31-459 became YPT-9A, then -9B. 31-461 became YBT-3 and YPT-9C. 31-459 and 31-460 ultimately became BT-5.

Stearman YBT-3 31-461

The 1932 YPT-9C 31-461, first designated YBT-3, then YPT-9C, was powered with a 170hp Kinner R-720 and had the same specifications as the model 6-H.

Stearman C-3

The 1928 Stearman C-3A was designed by Lloyd Stearman and Mac Short, essentially the same design as C2 except for the addition of a baggage compartment and various motors. The first Wichita Stearman, two C-3A models were built.

One hundred and thirty-six C-3B (ATC 55) were built from 1927 to 1929. ATC 2-124 was for EDO float conversions. They were priced at $8,970. One was built as C-3B Special under ATC 2-159 as a prototype mail carrier for the C-3MB model.

Stearman C-3B NX6257

The 1928 C-3C (ATC 62) built with a 150hp Hisso A engine. Two or three were built with possibly one, NC3440, converted to a C-3D model with a 180hp Hisso E engine and increased performance.

Stearman C-3C or D NC3440

One model C-3F was built, in 1928.

The sole C-3H built, in 1928, was powered by a 240hp Menasco engine.

Three model C-3K (ATC 2-70) was built in 1928 with a 125hp Siemens-Halske SH-12 engine. They were conversions of NC4713 and N7775, and one conversion from C-3B NC4098 under ATC 2-70.

One C-3L (ATC 2-58) model built in 1929, NX/NC6438, was powered by a 130hp Comet engine. It was later modified to C3C and C3B standard.

Eight of the C-3MB (ATC 137) single-place mail plane version of the C-3B were built from 1929; NC6487, NC6490, NC6496, and NC9057-9061, plus five modifications of C-3B with similar data; NC4552, NC6436, NC6486, NC7171, and NC8836, and five converted from C-2B; NC1598, NC3863, NC4011, NC4273, and NC5500.

One C-3 model was built under ATC 2-159 as the C-3B Special.

Stearman C3R NC656K

The 1929 three-place C3R Business Speedster was certified under ATC 251. The prototype was the last of the C3Bs, NC8828. Priced at $8,500, thirty-eight were built; NC566Y, NR567Y, NC656K-C662K, NC668K-673K, NC675K, NC773H, NC775H, NC780H-782H, NC789H-790H, NC793H-94H, NC799H, NC8822, NC8828, and NC8840. One was converted to C3P NR567Y and ten went to the Peruvian AF.

Stearman C3R NC794H

The Stearman biplane aircraft were well known in agri¬cultural aviation, with the C3BR of the ‘20s being fitted with a 450-hp Pratt & Whitney Wasps or Wright Cyclones.

Stearman C-2

Stearman C2 N3440

The 1927 three-place open cockpit Stearman C-2 was similar to the C1 except for radiator mounted underneath, hydraulic shock absorbers and dual controls.

Four were built; N1682 c/n 102; N3440 c/n 104 with Wright-Hisso A, N3922 with a Wright Whirlwind, and Salmson engines N4100. N3440 became a C3C.

About fifteen 1927 C-2B were built with 200hp Wright J-4 engines. Five were modified into C3MB; NC1598, NC3863, NC4011, NC4273, and NC5500.

Stearman C2B Probably “militarized” for a movie

The C-2C was built in 1928.

One C-2H was built, in 1929, registered NC5600, powered by a 260hp Menasco-Salmson B-2 engine, and certified under ATC 137.

Two C2K were built, in 1929 (ATC 2-53), powered by 125hp Ryan-Siemens SH-12engines. Priced at $6,470, they were later converted to C3K; N4098 and NC4713.

The C2MB Mail of 1928 were single-place C-2 mail plane conversions with 220hp Wright J-5 engines. They were priced at $8,730.
