Samsonov, Pyotr Dmitievich

Piotr Samsonov. He began his aeronautical work in Moscow, under the direction of DP Grigorovich. From the beginning he showed himself to be a talented engineer. In 1924 Grigorovich began the projection of the MRL-1 reconnaissance plane with the Liberty engine. Calculations and drawings were made by engineers PD Samsonov and KA Vigand.

Starting in the summer of 1925, D. P. Grigorivich moved with his team to Leningrad, locating in the “Krasni Liotchik” factory, where the Department of Experimental Shipbuilding (OMOS according to the acronym of Otdiel morskovo opytnovo samoliotoestroyenia) was created. As of October 1925, it became an independent organization. DP Samsonov started working there in the area of aircraft construction together with BV Shavrov.

In 1925 Grigorovich began development of the ROM-1 from a request considered to be of high priority. The construction of the hull was commissioned to BV Shavrov, while the wings and the power plant were left under the responsibility of Samsonov.

After the failures of DP Grigorovich, the Soviet government decided to invite the French aircraft builder Paul Aimé Richard, who arrived in the USSR in August 1928, to the country. The OPO-4 department, also known as the Experimental Union of Naval Aeronautical Construction (MOS VAO) subordinated to the Moscow Factory No.28, was created for him. The KB offices were located on Krasnaya Presnya street and the production facilities in the Factory itself. Samsonov was selected to work in the technical section, taking part in the development of the Richard TOM-1 naval bomber and torpedo bomber.

In 1933 Georgi Mikhailovich Beriev was appointed head of the TsKB brigade No.5 at the Menzhinsky Factory No.39, which designed naval models. As his second he was designated Pyotr Dmitrievich Samsonov, known for his ability and initiative. In December 1933 Samsonov managed to obtain, independently and without Beriev ‘s authorization, the task to develop a new amphibious flying boat. It was a development of the Beriev MBR-2 characterized by its more aerodynamic lines and its retractable landing gear towards the hull. The MBR-5 was designed to obtain a model with better performance. Although it presented a similar scheme, the weight was significantly lower. A prototype was built that was characterized by a number of problems that led to its abandonment.

In 1936 Samsonov was in charge of designing the weapons bay for a future long-range strategic bomber based on the American Martin M-156 passenger flying boat. Internal problems in the VVS resulted in the abandonment of this project.

By 1938, the construction of a new model of long-range amphibious flyingboat began, the MBR-7. The first prototype was destroyed in 1940 due to construction problems. Two other prototypes were never tested due to the start of the war and the need to concentrate on more prospective projects.

After the war Samsonov started working in the construction bureau of AS Yakovlev, taking an active part in the creation of the Yak-16 and leading the development of the Yak-100 helicopter.
