Goodyear Type ZR / ‘LZ’ Class

On September 4, 1923, the first American rigid airship, the U.S.S. "Shenandoah", flew for the first time and soon after went into service with the U.S. Navy. Designed by the Bureau of Aeronautics and built by the Naval Aircraft Factory, the ZR-1 was assembled at the Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. It was joined on October 14, 1924, by the Zeppelin-built ZR-3 (LZ-126) "Los Angeles", which was to remain in service until 1932 and was not finally scrapped until 1939. With the delivery of these ships, the era of the U.S. Navy's rigid airship programme had begun.
