Italy started to build a series of semi-rigid airships designed by Gen. Umberto Nobile. The first of the series, N-1, was made available to Amundsen Polar Expedition. Renamed Norge, with Nobile at the controls and Italian crew, the airship reached the North Pole on May 12, 1926.
